I have started a new course, Effective Leadership. In Chapter 2, there is a statement that has set me up for the rest of the year. The statement is based on John Maxwell’s book, Your Roadmap for Success, which lists three steps to being a successful leader.
- Know your purpose in life
- Grow to reach your maximum potential
- Sow seeds that benefit others
In the beginning of the year, everyone is discussing goals. These discussions are with family, friends and co-workers. It is important to know your purpose. What is your purpose in life? What is your purpose at work? What gift has God given you that must be shared in your life before going to Heaven? What does your heart beat for? What must you do that is a godly burning desire you cannot stop thinking about?
I am carefully reviewing what should be my top priority at work, the one most important goal that I will focus on this year that I can control and that will be important to the overall organization. This is the same for my personal life. I am seeking the top priority for this year that will impact everything else I do. I have one main goal that I will focus on which will impact 6 executable tasks for this year. I am taking this seriously because I need God’s will to be done. The will of God always contributes to the overall building of His Kingdom. It is stated in 2 Corinthians 5:9 that “we make it our goal to please him”.
What is your spiritual gift? You will notice your gift is seen in your everyday life. Sharpen that gift. Ask God where your gift should be used. The more we align our goals with the will of God, the more effective we will be in obtaining our goals. Our priority is God. It is not about our will but the will of God for our lives.
