10 Ways to Connect with New People

Jesus connected with many people from all walks of life (rich, poor, women, men). Yet, we struggle connecting. Matthew 9:9 notes a simple interaction between Jesus and the tax collector Matthew. Simple but life changing. We can change lives through simply connecting with people. And, while their lives are being changed, we will notice our hearts will soften. It will no longer be about us but about showing the love of Jesus. We will experience less rejection and depression because it is not about us; it is about Jesus as Colossians 3:23 indicates.

Put your heart and soul into every activity you do, as though you are doing it for the Lord himself and not merely for others. -The Passion Translation Bible version

Whatever you do [whatever your task may be], work from the soul [that is, put in your very best effort], as [something done] for the Lord and not for men. -Amplified Bible version

Connect for the Lord, not for yourself. Here are 10 ways to connect with people.

  • Smile. A smile can brighten anyone’s day, even a stranger.
  • Show your self friendly. There is always someone watching us; how we react, how we interact and how we communicate. Be friendly even in tough and irritable situations.
  • Start a conversation. Start with your location (what brings you to the park today, why did you choose this place to visit).
  • See it as a ministry. You are helping others by sharing the love of Jesus through connection.
  • Don’t skip steps. Don’t rush into a best friendship. Build a foundation of Jesus love. This is so you don’t get hurt if the other person does not reciprocate. Love everyone, as we as Christians are called to do.
  • Mingle. Take advantage of social opportunities to get to know people.
  • Say hello. Intentionally speak to people when you are in group settings. Someone may want to say hello but have not built up the courage.
  • Show love to everyone. Weekly, try to touch (handshake), give a gift, affirm someone with words, spend quality time with people, and serve.
  • Accept love from everyone. Everyone shows love differently. Accept the way they are showing love to you. It may not be your love language but could be theirs.
  • Don’t give up connecting. Continue to try, prayerfully.

The more we try connecting, the easier it becomes. It may not be easy at first but God will build our confidence as long as we are connecting unto Him to show His love.
